Residents are up in arms over an extension of the school zone schedule in NSW, that could lead to a rude shock for some drivers over the Christmas break.
Students broke for the summer holiday break last Friday, but teachers and some students will be returning to school grounds on Monday and Tuesday.
A warning has been issued for drivers to keep their eye on the speedometer for the next two days if they want to avoid receiving a fright in their mailbox after Christmas.
When driving through school zones between the hours of 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm, motorists must drive no faster than 40km/h.
Those caught driving just 60km/h in a school zone, could receive a fine of $369 and lose 5 demerit points.
Any faster and the fine almost doubles to $615 and a loss of 5 demerit points, with the largest fine at $2676 and a loss of 7 demerit points for driving more than 45km/h over the speed limit.
A post sharing the news to a community Facebook page dedicated to residents of the Sutherland Shire in Sydney’s south attracted some mixed reactions to the warning.
“Is that because teachers are incapable of being adults while crossing roads etc?,” one member wrote.
“Do adults not know how to cross a road. Just a money grab,” another said.
“And here we all thought the school zones were for the kids,” a third person said.
One member of the group defended the strange timing of the school zone period.
“Its because tuesday is technically the official last day of the school term, its just that they choose to make these last two days pupil free days,” the person said.
School zones end on Tuesday afternoon, and will restart back up again in February when school returns.
