Robert Downey Junior Respects Martin Scorseses Opinion On Marvel Movies But Has To Disag

According to a report from People.com, Robert Downey Junior recently came out to address Martin Scorese’s comments on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Martin spoke with reporters from Empire this past week and said that he felt as though the films weren’t true “cinema,” because they fail to communicate the emotional and psychological experiences of a human being.

Just a couple of days after Martin made his comments, Robert Downey Junior appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM, in which the host pressed him on the issue. The 54-year-old actor addressed the 76-year-old’s comments, stating that he “appreciated” what he had to say, but respectfully disagreed.

Robert stated that it’s important for the movies to be made because it’s about capturing more than one perspective, so “we can come to the center and move on.” However, Robert added, Martin’s comment “makes no sense.”

Near the beginning of the interview, Robert stated he never once believed the MCU would become as big as it is today. It’s arguably one of the most successful movie franchises of all time. Downey Junior stated that he wanted to take a look at Scorsese’s comments because he likes to understand multiple perspectives.

As it was noted above, the media controversy started when Martin claimed he doubted the value of the MCU as “cinema” during a conversation with Empire reporters through the British newspaper, The Guardian.

When asked if he liked the movies, Scorsese said he gave it a shot, but “that’s not cinema.” Rather than cinema, the director began, he thinks they’re a lot more like “theme parks.” Martin’s comments didn’t go uncriticized, however, from some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, including Joss Whedon and James Gunn.

Joss Whedon sat in the director’s chair for two Avengers films, including 2015’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron, as well as 2012’s The Avengers. On Twitter, Joss Whedon stated that Mr. James Gunn put his heart and soul into the MCU movies, including Guardians Of The Galaxy. Other stars like Karen Gillan poked holes in Martin’s criticism as well.
