Mehidy Hasan is a Bangladeshi professional cricketer who has represented his country in all 3 formats of the sport (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is), as a bowling all-rounder. He was a member of the Bangladeshi squad that had reached the semi-final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, the first time that Bangladesh had reached the semi-final of any senior ICC event. He was also a key member of the Bangladeshi squad that had reached the final of the 2018 edition of the Asia Cup, the 3rd time that the country had achieved the feat. Before breaking into the senior national team in October 2016, he had captained Bangladesh in both the 2014 and the 2016 editions of the Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup. The team had finished 9th and 3rd, respectively, in those tournaments. The 2016 edition was the first time that Bangladesh had reached the semi-final of the tournament and Mehidy’s all-round performances had played a vital role in that. For scoring 242 runs and recording 12 dismissals in just 6 matches, he was named the ‘Player of the Tournament’.

At the 2016 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup, Mehidy was Bangladesh’s best bowler in their opening group stage match against South Africa (3/37 in 9.4 overs) and their best batter in the semi-final loss to the eventual champions West Indies (60 runs off 74 balls).
Bangladesh’s captain and talisman in that tournament, he was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his stirring all-round performances in Bangladesh’s wins over Nepal in the quarter-final (55 runs not out off 65 balls & 1/51 in 10 overs) and Sri Lanka in the 3rd-place playoff match (3/28 in 10 overs & 53 runs off 66 balls).
His performances in the 2016 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup had brought him on the radar of Bangladesh’s national selectors and he was fast-tracked into the senior national team. He had made his international debut in the first match of Bangladesh’s 2-match home test series against England, in October 2016.
He had made an immediate impact by recording figures of 6/80 in 39.5 overs in England’s 1st innings of that match, thus becoming the youngest Bangladesh player to have taken a 5-wicket haul on his test match debut. England, though, went on to win the hard-fought test by 22 runs. This was the first occasion where Bangladesh had taken all 20 wickets against England in a test match. This was also England’s narrowest win against Bangladesh in a test match, their narrowest victory margin in a test match played in Asia, and Bangladesh’s narrowest defeat in test match cricket (in terms of runs).
In the next (and final) match of the series, he had recorded sensational figures of 6/82 in 28 overs and 6/77 in 21.3 overs to win the ‘Player of the Match’ award and help Bangladesh win the match by 108 runs. This was Bangladesh’s first-ever test match victory against England. His overall match figures of 12/159 were the best by a Bangladeshi bowler ever in a test match. He had also become just the 6th bowler in history to have recorded three 5-wicket hauls in his first 2 test matches.
Mehidy’s 19-wicket haul across the 2 matches, the best performance by a Bangladeshi bowler in a test match series, had also won him the ‘Player of the Series’ award. This had made him the 1st player from Bangladesh, and only the 9th player overall, to have won the ‘Player of the Series’ award in his debut test series.
In November 2018, in a home test match against the West Indies, he had recorded scarcely believable figures of 7/58 in 16 overs and 5/59 in 20 overs. He had won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his performance and his overall figures of 12/117 were the best by a Bangladeshi bowler ever in a test match, bettering his own previous record of 12/159. Bangladesh went on to win the match by an innings and 184 runs. This was the first time in history that Bangladesh had enforced the ‘follow-on’ (the act of forcing an opponent to bat in their 2nd innings immediately after the end of their 1st innings) in a test match and it was also the first instance of Bangladesh winning a test match by an innings.
In February 2021, he had scored his maiden test match century (103 runs off 168 balls) in the first match of Bangladesh’s 2-match home test series against the West Indies. He had also bowled spectacularly in that match – 4/58 in 26 overs in the 1st innings and 4/113 in 35 overs in the 2nd innings. His brilliant all-round performance, however, was overshadowed by the West Indies who had successfully hunted down a mammoth target of 395 runs. This was the 5th-highest successful run chase of all time in the 4th innings of a test match as well as the highest successful run chase in a test match held in Asia.
During the next (and final) match of the series, he had become the fastest Bangladesh bowler (24 matches) to record 100 wickets in test match cricket. Bangladesh, though, as if stunned by the West Indies’ remarkable run-chase in the first match, messed up their chase of a moderate target of 231 runs to lose the match by just 17 runs, and thus, the series by a margin of 2-0.
In February 2022, in the first match of a bilateral home ODI series against Afghanistan, he had come into bat, at number 8, with Bangladesh struggling horribly at a score of 45/6 in the 12th over while chasing a target of 216 runs. He had then stitched together an unbroken stand of 174 runs, for the 7th wicket, with Afif Hossain, to guide Bangladesh to a sensational 4-wicket victory. These were the most target runs successfully chased down by a team in ODIs after losing 6 wickets and this was the 2nd-highest partnership for the 7th wicket or lower in ODI history.
This was the first instance of a team winning an ODI with their top 6 batters aggregating as low as 30 runs. Mehidy’s score of 81 runs not out (120 balls) in that match was the highest individual score in a successful ODI chase while batting at number 8 or lower. His partnership with Afif was 79.45% of Bangladesh’s total, the highest contribution by a team’s batters below the number 6 position, in ODI history. He had also bowled tightly in that match (0/28 in 10 overs) and was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his all-round performance.
In the Bangladeshi domestic circuit, Mehidy has played for Kalabagan Cricket Academy (2014–2016) and Khulna Division (2015–Present) across all 3 formats. In franchise-based T20 leagues, he has turned out for Rajshahi Kings (2016–2018-19), Khulna Tigers (2019-20), and Chattogram Challengers (2021-22) in the BPL (Bangladesh Premier League); and Trinbago Knight Riders (2017) in the CPL (Caribbean Premier League).
