Kagiso Rabada is a South African cricketer and TV personality, best known as an international cricketer who started playing for the South Africa National Team in November 2014. In 2016, he won the “Cricketer of the Year” prize at the Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) annual dinner. His first name translates to “peace.”
Kagiso acknowledges the fact that unlike one of his best friends, cricketer Lungi Ngidi, he was privileged and didn’t grow up in poverty.
Kagiso fell in love with sports as soon as he enrolled in primary school. He initially played rugby.
As a kid, he used to run barefoot in the townships outside Johannesburg, which he partially credits for his incredible stamina.
He regularly bowls in the 140 to 150 kilometers per hour range.
Despite being one of the top bowlers, Kagiso admits that he loves McDonald’s food and drinks espresso with a lot of sugar. He also doesn’t want to stop going out to music festivals and having a few beers on occasions.
After he competed in the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup for South Africa, Kagiso was dubbed “the fastest and most feared bowler in the competition.”
After 2016 World T20 in India ended, everyone expected him to be sold at an IPL auction. Instead, he decided to sign a contract with Kent, a South African cricket team. It wasn’t until February 2017 that he signed with Delhi Daredevils in the IPL for INR 50 million or around $701k.
In January 2018, Kagiso topped both ICC ODI bowler and ICC Test bowler rankings, making him one of the youngest cricketers to do so.
In August 2018, the annual reference book titled Wisden, also known as “the Bible of Cricket” named Kagiso the best young player in the world.
At the age of 23 years and 50 days, Kagiso was named the youngest bowler to take 150 wickets in Tests.
When asked about his secret, Kagiso stated that it wasn’t just his skill that made him a fast bowler. He credits his success to aggression that helps him bowl faster for longer, which was naturally present in him from a young age. Furthermore, Kagiso stated that this intensity also made batsmen uncomfortable to stand up to him.
Kagiso read the book The Art of War by Sun Tzu in late 2019, which influenced him to find balance and maturity in life.
As of late December 2019, he broke the code of conduct 5 times and received 2 suspensions by the International Cricket Council.
In January 2020, he was banned for 1 test match and fined 15% of his match fees when he aggressively celebrated the wicket of Joe Root (England captain) during the 3rd test match of South Africa against England. He also earned 1 demerit point.
In February 2022, during IPL 2022 mega auction, he was purchased by Punjab Kings for INR 9.25 crore (or INR 925 million).
In April 2023, Kagiso dismissed Wriddhiman Saha during a 2023 IPL match against Gujarat Titans. With this, he became the fastest bowler to take 100 wickets in IPL, taking 64 matches.
