John Mayer has spent nearly two decades performing his long list of hits in front of thousands of fans in arenas all across the world. But, when he was just 18 years old and finishing high school, the legendary guitarist performed at his graduation – even though he didn’t receive his diploma that day.

Mayer just posted a video on Instagram from June 1995, and in the caption the 42-year-old wrote that it was a clip of him performing with his high school band at their graduation ceremony in Fairfield, Connecticut.

The Waiting On the World To Change singer explained that he didn’t actually get his diploma that day because he was “a terrible student,” and all he cared about was “playing the guitar and writing songs.”

“So let this be a lesson to all young people everywhere – if you follow your dreams and stay focused, one day you too can go to summer school,” wrote Mayer.

Just six years after his high school graduation, Mayer recorded his first major hit Your Body Is A Wonderland for his debut album Room For Squares, and that song led to him winning his first Grammy in 2003 in the Best Pop Male Vocal Performance category.

Mayer has won a total of seven Grammys in his career, including Song of the Year in 2005 for Daughters, Best Pop Vocal Album in 2007 for Continuum, and Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance in 2009 for Gravity.

Earlier this week, Mayer was in a Los Angeles courtroom to testify against a stalker who has been harassing him for months. According to The Blast, the obsessed fan has been sending Mayer messages that mention serial killers and threaten physical violence. The man also showed up in North Carolina to see Mayer, but his security team kept him from entering the venue.

During his brief testimony, Mayer explained that the statements his stalker has made – plus his behavior – proves that the man has an unhealthy obsession with him.

The judge in the case ended up granting Mayer a permanent five-year restraining order against the stalker, who now has to stay at least 100 yards away from the singer and can’t legally communicate with him in any way.
