Joe Jackson Gibbs, an American car racing team owner, and former professional football coach was born on November 25, 1940.
In 1959, Gibbs earned his diploma from Santa Fe High School, where he was the standout quarterback. Don Coryell was Gibbs’ coach while he was a student at San Diego State University and Cerritos Junior College. Gibbs received a bachelor’s degree from SDSU in 1964 and a master’s in 1966.
Gibbs began his career at San Diego State under Coryell as the offensive line coach (1964–1966).
He coached the Washington Redskins of the National Football League as their head coach twice, from 1981 to 1992 and again from 2004 to 2007. Over the course of his first 12 seasons with the Redskins, he guided them to eight postseason appearances, four NFC Championship victories, and three Super Bowl triumphs.
