Brandon Mateo's obituary called him a selfless and fun-loving foodie. It read: “He was fiercely protective of his friends and wouldn't tolerate bullying." He said thank you and opened the door for everyone. "Brandon had the brightest future, and we can't breathe without him.”
Mateo shot himself in the head at 14. Even though Brandon died in February 2020, his mom, Shannon Mateo, still works for the causes he cared about.
Brandon's suicide was among Washoe County's leading teen deaths. To Shannon's surprise, nobody wanted to discuss mental health. Shannon told ABC8:
“There is nowhere for people with mental health issues to go and be with people like them and say it's ok." Suicide is ignored. Nobody wants to talk about suicide, but it's sad for Damonte because they're being dragged into something they didn't do.
Authorities encouraged suicide and mental health discussions after Brandon's death. Shannon created mental health videos for the Washoe County Sheriff's Office in May 2021.
“It's his mother's mission to talk about suicide openly, so that others might be willing to broach the subject with their loved ones,” the Washoe County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook on May 21, 2021.
Shannon often solicits donations for suicide prevention campaigns based on Brandon's interests. In December 2022, she asked her Facebook followers to fund a Bees Buddies scholarship program honoring Brandon's cooking. 6 December 2022:
“He loved cooking. That's why Bees Buddies is awarding a $500 scholarship to a senior with the Damonte Ranch High Foods Certificate.

"Brandon mateo, you will be perpetually missed, yet always remembered," the sheriff's specialization said in a proclamation. "We all extend our love, petitions, considerations, and sympathies to Brandon mateo, his companions, and associates."
Brandon mateo cause of death naturally
Brandon is my oldest. Suicide by headshot at 14. Never dismiss teen love. At 14, love taught me its value. After Brandon disclosed, I did everything right, but after three months, his broken heart was too much.
Brokenhearted, my 5'9" twin flame left me. When your kids talk, listen.
Never dismiss your teen's concerns. Listen. Sympathize. Stop asking why. Asking "why" breaks someone who can't explain.
Instead of writing a clever caption for my son's senior yearbook, I'm giving Brandon's classmates scholarships.
Tonight, hug your kids tighter, change your safe combos (kids are smarter than you think), and hug them again.

Who is Brandon mateo?
Shannon and Robert Mateo had Brandon on August 1, 2005. Shannon and Robert thought he was lonely despite his happiness. Thus, Codi was his younger brother. Mateo, with his rare golden eyes, cherished his loved ones. Obituary:
Brandon loved to hug. He hugged us five times daily. He said "I love you" morning, night, after dinner, and just because. He always said, "Have a good day, sleep well, and do good."
When 12-year-old Brandon expressed concerns about mental illness, his parents matched him with a therapist and bought him the drugs he liked. He received more love and attention from the family.
Brandon has improved, according to a Mateo family GoFundMe page. “His smile became bigger and more frequent,” it reads. On February 18, 2020, Mateo returned from school, sent his final text message, and committed suicide.
“One day, you know, the chemicals in his brain couldn't keep up with the medicine, I don't know, there was no catalyst, no event, nothing,” Shannon told 8 ABC.
Shannon blamed Brandon's suicide on a broken heart in a December 12, 2022, Facebook post. Writer:
“Never marginalise teenage love. Love at 14 taught me its value. After Brandon disclosed, I did everything right, but after three months his broken heart became too much.”
